In span of just a couple of short years, Davion Williams has gone from being a well-regarded basketball recruit for the class of 2018 to being one of the most coveted football prospects the state of Michigan has to offer and the 3-star defensive back out of Belleville will be camping at Michigan State this weekend.
Williams recently spoke with Spartan Nation and said that he’s looking to showcase his skills in East Lansing with Michigan State co-defensive coordinator Harlon Barnett working with him at the camp this Saturday.
“I’m hoping to accomplish working with coach Barnett and showing him some stuff that I can do,” he said. “So he can tweak some stuff and I can get better coaching from a guy like coach Barnett.”
But when it comes to making a decision, Williams will be weighing more than just what happens on the field as he comes from a strong family and a school’s family atmosphere will play a big role for him.
Williams said that the importance of family is something that’s not only been instilled in him by his family, but by both his football coach, Jermain Crowell, and his basketball coach, Adam Trumpour as well.
“Family atmosphere, I feel like that’s the biggest thing,” he said. “I’m just brought up by family, my basketball coach, coach Trumpour and my football coach, coach Crowell, we always talk about family being important. You can’t do anything without family, so I feel like that’s the first step in being successful.”
The Spartans have plenty of competition when it comes to the hopes of landing a commitment from Williams as he has plenty of interest from several Big Ten schools, including Indiana and Wisconsin, who he has recently visited.
Williams said that he is intrigued by what Indiana has to offer is that the Hoosiers are a program on the rise and has seen Indiana take steps forward in recent years.
“I see that they’re up and rebuilding,” he said. “I see a lot of the stuff that they’re doing and a lot of new things there and I feel like they’re a program on the go up.”
When it comes to the Badgers, Williams noted that Wisconsin’s campus in Madison is one that caught his attention and came away from his visit impressed.
“It was nice there, I enjoyed it,” he said. “It’s one of the most beautiful campuses that I’ve been to in a while – I liked it because it sits off the lake.”
Williams currently offers from Wisconsin, Indiana, Purdue, Iowa, Michigan State and several others after playing just one year of high school football and could see plenty more come his way with strong showings in summer camps and throughout his senior season.
With a slew of college offers in hand, Williams still doesn’t have a set timetable as to when he’d like to make a college decision and is taking the recruiting process one day at a time.
“I want to make my decision when I get that feeling inside that this is the place,” he said. “If I make a decision early, that’s because this is the place that I want to be and I can feel it inside of me. But other than that, I’m just going to weigh my options and talk to college coaches and get some experience.”
