Update: Holmes decommits from Purdue to MSU

Spartans lose out on quarterback Jordan Steffy but get a great consolation prize as Detroit Henry Ford linebacker Dwayne Holmes de-commits from Purdue and verbals to Michigan State.

(EAST LANSING) - It's getting wild in the recruiting wars and Michigan State is getting a reputation for playing rough and tumble.

Yesterday was one a key day for the Spartans and coach John L. Smith's staff got a big victory when Detroit Henry Ford linebacker/tight end Dwayne Holmes de-committed from Purdue and instead decided to stay at home to MSU.

Holmes committed early in the process and almost immediately begin waffling in his decision. He told TheInsiders.com Midwest recruting analyst Chris Pool that [he] "committed to Purdue early and I thought I might have made that move a little too early."

"Michigan State, Wisconsin, Colorado and Boston College all offered me during May and I felt that I owed it to myself to check everything out before making a solid commitment.

"After looking at the complete picture and talking it over with my family, I've decided to make my commitment to Purdue solid.

It turns out it wasn't so solid. In fact, Holmes begin leaning toward the Green and White last week and yesterday he made the switch.

That turned out to be the bright spot for Michigan State. They got the bad news yesterday that quarterback Jordan Steffy would stay close to home and attend Maryland. Maryland was not even thought to be among his favorites but the quarterback was playing it close to the vest and surprised everyone with his college selection.

TheInsiders.com has learned that MSU is closing on several top prospects and is hoping for more good news this weekend. Stay tuned to SpartansInsider.com for the most up to the minute news.
