EAST LANSING - Michigan State has 23 verbal commitments and will wait by the fax machine until just before John L. Smith's 4:00pm press conference today in connection with the NCAA's National Signing Day for high school athletes.

MSU is also hoping for a couple of surprises, Southfield quarterback Brandon Summers could end up at Michigan State. Summers gave a verbal commitment to Indiana, but is now said to be very interested in Michigan State.

MSU is holding out hope for Pompano Beach cornerback Walter McFadden, Illinois corner Markus Murry and Bayonne, NJ linebacker/running back Jerome Hayes. Any or all of the three would move MSU way up in the Big Ten recruiting rankings.

MSU's class is led by three four star athletes including defensive end David Stanton from College of the Canyons community college. Stanton is expected to step in and play immediately on the Spartans defensive line.

A pair of talented running back, A.J. Jimmerson and Javon Ringer will give MSU talent galore in the offensive backfield. Each will vie for a shot at replacing the departed DeAndra Cobb in the playing rotation for State this fall.
