Brian Carlwell commits to Illinois

The Chicago Sun-Times is reporting this morning that Brian Carlwell, the highly touted 6'10" power forward from Proviso East (IL) high School has decided to commit to the University of Illinois.

Carlwell picked the Illini ahead of Michigan State, North Carolina and Florida State.

Proviso East is the high school alma matter of current Illini point guard Dee Brown, as well as current Michigan State guard Shannon Brown.

Carlwell possesses a solid skill set, with back to the basket skills and tenacity on the glass and on the defensive end. He also has really developed his court awareness as a passer out of the low post.

Carlwell is a big get Bruce Weber's program and could be a springboard for a truly 2006 class for the folks in Champaign.

Carlwell joins Richard Semrau, a 6-9 forward from Ohio who committed last month, to give Illinois two top-100 recruits in the 2006 class.

After Dee Brown committed to Illinois in 2001, Deron Williams and James Augustine quickly followed, giving Illinois the core of its 2005 Final Four team.

With Michigan State currently possessing a number of frontcourt players on their roster (Paul Davis, Drew Naymick, Marquise Gray, Delco Rowley, Goran Suton, Idong Ibok) Carlwell's decision is not surprising.

With the depth in the front court, the Spartans need for a big man is not all that great in 2006. Nevertheless, there are three top notch players they seek the services of; Indianapolis Lawrence North's 7'0" C Greg Oden, 6'7" Detroit Pershing PF Deshawn Sims and Flint Powers' 7'0" C Tom Herzog. All three players are Top 100 athletes that any program would find a spot for once they make their respective decisions.
