LB Eric Gordon Commits

Following in the footsteps of his grandfather, linebacker Eric Gordon, from Traverse City West SR High School committed to coach John L. Smith and the Spartan staff Tuesday night. Scout.com and Superprep's Allen Wallace spoke to Gordon earlier today to get the latest.

Following in the footsteps of his grandfather, Don Dohoney (Michigan State defensive end 1942-1952), linebacker Eric Gordon, from Traverse City West SR High School (Mich.) committed to coach John L. Smith and the Spartan staff last night (6/21).

"I called coach Smith last night. He told me that he wanted me to be a Spartan and offered me over the phone. I committed right there," said Gordon.

"My family history with the school and the program there played a big part in this decision. I really can't picture myself committing anywhere else. I really get along with all of the coaches there--they're all really easy to talk to. It's a great program and I see it going really far in the near future here.

"I like how they're doubling the size of their weight room and adding onto it, and they're also rebuilding their stadium. That also played a part in this decision.

"Coach Smith was a little surprised, but he knew that I really liked Michigan State, so he was really excited when I committed there," he said. "This is a 100% commitment for me. I won't go to any other camps or unofficial visits.

"I was supposed to leave for a camp at Penn State tomorrow, but I decided not to. I called coach (Ron) Vanderlinden (linebackers) from Penn State today and told him that I committed and that I wouldn't be able to make camp. I plan to call the other coaches from the programs that have offered me.

"My #2 and #3 schools behind Michigan State would have to be Indiana (offer) and Missouri (offer). I've been to Indiana before and I spent a lot of time talking with the coaches there. They've got a great program. And I've spoken with coach (Craig) Kuligowski (defensive line) from Missouri before and they seem like a really good program," said Gordon.

"My parents are really excited for me. They knew it was both my goal and my dream school to go to Michigan State. My grandfather has passed away already, but I'm sure he'd be really excited about it. I'm also sure that he'd find a way to get back at me if I went somewhere else (laughs).

"I'll probably take an official visit to Michigan State when I can. But that'll be it for me. I won't go anywhere else."

3.4 GPA/18 ACT/June 11 retest "I think I did better on the ACT the second time. As far as I know I'm fully qualified."
