Ramar Smith Update: Discussions or Decisions?

Is he going to prep school? Is Michigan State still on the short list for his services? InsideMichiganState's Doug Warren has the latest on Michigan's top hoops' prospect from the Class of 2006.

The big story so far for Michigan State basketball watchers comes in this first week of July comes from a report, from Bucknuts.com regarding the future of Detroit Martin Luther King standout, Ramar Smith. Last night, and earlier today, I spoke to Ramar's high school coach, Benny White. He told me that while he hadn't spoken to Ramar recently, he knew that there had been discussions about leaving King, but as to where he had no idea.

"I know he's been looking into different things regarding prep school," White said. "With regards as to where, this is news to me. I'm not surprised though."

However, while the prep school option has been discussed, according to Andre Charity, an official from Ramar's AAU team, The Family, that is all they are at this stage – discussions – and nothing has been finalized.

"This (prep school) is one option being considered by Ramar this has not been decided on," Charity said. "I just talked to him (Wednesday night) about the conversation he had with the Bucknuts scout and (Ramar) did not confirm with him that he is definitely going (to prep school) just that it was something he was considering."

As far as the Bucknuts article reporting Ramar as not listing Michigan State among his top choices – that also remains open to debate. While UConn has been the frontrunner for Ramar's siginature for some time now, all indications are that Michigan State remains on his short list. Ramar told me as much in an interview two weeks ago.

"I have always been under the impression that Michigan State remained on Ramar's list," said White.

Along those lines, another story filed yesterday by CBS Sportsline's Gregg Doyle, showed Ramar still having the Spartans among his top suitors.

So goes the world of high profile summer basketball.

InsideMichiganState.com will have more on this story in the coming days.
