Notre Dame opened its season beating then no. 23 Pittsburgh and followed with an impressive victory over then no. 3 Michigan. Both games were tough road games, but it helped the Irish into the no. 10 spot in the AP.
Notre Dame is celebrating the 75th anniversary of Notre Dame Stadium this year and the Spartans have had success in South Bend, winning more games (11) than any other opponent. They will also look to win the fifth straight there.
The Michigan State high-powered offense has racked up 1184 yards of total offense to Notre Dame's 746. They come into the game averaging 45.5 points per game and their offense will be put to the test as the Irish defense has only given up an average of 15.5 points in their two games, which were against two ranked teams.
"I know (Jason) Teague didn't play last week, but whether they played (Jehuu) Caulcrick or (Javon) Ringer--Didn't really seem to make a difference who they put in there with the system they have going," said new Notre Dame head coach Charlie Weis, formerly an assistant with the New England Patriots of the NFL.
The Irish offense is led by quarterback Brady Quinn and running back Darius Walker. Walker has averaged 102 yards on the ground in each of his first two games and he will be up against a Spartan rush defense that has given up 137 yards total.
"They've got a great running back and a great running game," said defensive end Clifton Ryan. "We haven't seen a run team yet and Notre Dame is going to run, no doubt about that."
One thing that might be dangerous for the Irish is the chance for a major letdown. It's the Irish' first home game and it happens to be against a Michigan State group who can smell a spot in the AP top 25 with a win.
"There are a lot of pros with playing at home. But the one con of playing at home is you get out of your normal routine that they've been in for the last couple weeks," said Weis. Who believes that there shouldn't be a problem with the team because, "Everything is scripted the same as it's been for the last two weeks."
Saturday's game should be a great game between two teams who are looking to build from great early starts to their seasons.
