Smith continued to give Michigan credit for "making more plays" than Michigan State did, but he lamented the dropped passes and missed opportunites that kept the Spartans from remaining undefeated.
"We can't afford to drop six balls, we can't afford to turn the ball over, we have to make some kicks and we can't give up the big run - let somebody run cheap down the middle.
All of those things combined and [if we] ... make a play or two out of there and maybe it's a different game. It wasn't, so you have to congratulate those guys and you have to move on and get ready for Ohio State."
Smith said that his assistant coaches would be out recruiting during the bye week tomorrow through Friday, taking advantage of time off afforded by the off week.
He said that the team would do some throwing and some kicking drills to try to "stay fresh" during the period, but one of the goals was to get the team freshened up and get healthy.
"We'll practice up on Saturday and Sunday and go back to a regular week next week and we'll get a couple [or] three extra days on these guys.
David Herron, Jr. still is suffering the effects of a mild concussion. "He was in and out and came back in kind of on his own. He's still a little foggy from a couple of weeks back. He's been getting some headaches. That has to subside a little bit.
Kaleb Thornhill is being bothered by his knee soreness. "He has chronic knees," said Smith. David Stanton has a shoulder that he needs to get healthy again. Smith said freshman running back Javon Ringer (shoulder) and sophomore Jehuu Caulcrick (aches) both would like some time to get healty.
"This is a good week for that. This is a week we can grow because you're going to get a good three extra days - which is a week's practice - for those young guys to get extra snaps. We're not going to overdo with the guys that are playing, but its particularly good week for those guys who may not be playing as much. [Justin] Kershaw, Otis [Wiley], [Ross] Weaver all of those guys that are in backup roles that are rookies, this is a good week for those guys.
