Penn State is the only undefeated team left at 6-0 and doesn't get a break next week as they go to Ann Arbor next week to play Michigan. The way this conference is shaping up, the final game of the season between Penn State and Michigan State in East Lansing could quite possibly be for the Big Ten title.
Still looking pretty safe in the conference are the one-loss teams: Michigan State, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Indiana. A loss by Penn State next week would mean a possible five-way tie atop the conference standings with four weeks left.
This years' fierce competition within the conference has made it more interesting for fans and teams, with every game being pivotal in the race for the title.
So while Michigan State prepares to face a suddenly down Ohio State team, they know that the heartbreaking loss to Michigan last week does not count them out of the Big Ten Title picture.
Here are some key games next week where the outcomes could make the Big Ten picture a little clearer:
#16 Penn State at #21 Michigan: The Wolverines' roller coaster season continues, with three losses already they now play the unusual role of spoiler in the conference. If they wake up and beat the Nittany Lions, they can surely stir up the standings even more. The Spartans look to get back on track and try to avoid another letdown to a ranked opponent, something that they have a history of doing.
#19 Michigan State(4-1,1-1) at #6 Ohio State: The Buckeyes have two losses already and while their Big Ten chances have taken a major blow, they can pull the Spartans down with them.
#14 Wisconsin(5-1,1-1) at Minnesota: The battle of one-loss teams to see who can ruin the others' title hopes. Watch out for Gopher running back Laurence Maroney, who has run himself into being a darkhorse for the Heisman.
Ultimately, the Big Ten Title could come down to the last week of the season, but the weeks leading up to then will make the standings a bit clearer. With Joe Paterno's Nittany Lions returning to the strong class of the Big Ten, it makes things even more interesting. Michigan State's hopes of a Big Ten title remain strong.
