Minnesota's Sean McWhirter is one of the best defensive end prospects in the Midwest and he has the numbers to back it up. So far in 2005, the 6-foot-4, 250-pounder, from Orono High in Long Lake, has 75 tackles, 20 tackles for loss and nine sacks.

McWhirter has several scholarship offers and he took an official visit to East Lansing last weekend for a visit with John L. Smith's Michigan State Spartans. McWhirter was kind enough to shed some light on that visit with Scout.com

"I had a good (Michigan State) visit," McWhirter said. "Friday and Saturday we went through the regular official visit stuff, Sunday I sat down with Coach Smith and we chatted for about 20 minutes. Coach Smith offered me a scholarship during our conversation.

"I didn't give Michigan State a commitment. Michigan State was a nice place. It seems that every school that I have visited has their own unique positives. I plan on setting an official visit up with Minnesota here shortly but that's about it for now."

McWhirter has made several unofficial visits to his top school choices and we asked him if there was a leader at this point.

"Not right now," McWhirter said. "I want to take my visits and sort some things out. Every school had their pro's and I want to take my official visits."

McWhirter also told Scout.com that Michigan State sees him as a defensive end but they also aren't ruling out the possibility of using his speed at linebacker.

McWhirter is a three-star rated prospect, according to Scout.com, and he's ranked No. 62 overall in the Midwest.
