The signing of kicker Brett Swenson of Ft. Lauderdale (FL) St. Thomas Aquinas was just the first of many commitments that they hope to gain in the next few weeks. MSU is in the process of setting up visits to East Lansing with the hopes of striking paydirt.
Wide receiver Darrell Davis, who is scheduled to visit Michigan State next weekend, is high on MSU's wish list. At 6-foot-5, 195, The Dade City Pasco standout is the kind of prototypical big receiver MSU covets. He is being recruited by many schools as a defensive back, but MSU has promised to try him at receiver, his preferred position.
Defensive tackle Kenrick Ellis, (four stars) the #33 defensive tackle in the nation according to Scout.com, is also schedule to visit MSU on January 6. Ellis, a native of Jamaica might be a longshot for MSU, but that won't stop them from trying. The Spartans' John L. Smith mentioned in his season ending press conference that finding interior linemen has been on of the toughest tasks for the Spartans and the 6-foot-5, 320-pound Elliss has been dominant at Lake Worth Leonard.
As a junior he had 72 tackles, 16 for loss, and 14 quarterback sacks. He has already passed his SAT so he is good to go for whatever school gets the signing. Florida, Florida State and Miami are salvating over a player Scout.com has rated the best defensive tackle prospect since Vince Wilfork.
Ellis, though, has crossed Miami off his list of finalists.
"My five visits will probably be Tennessee, Rutgers, South Carolina, Michigan State, and Michigan," he said. "I was hoping to hear from Miami about a visit but they kinda shut me off. I asked Coach Cristobal what's up and why they never offered. He said they need more film and wanted to evaluate me better. I was like 'forget it, I'm done'. I havent heard from them in a few weeks."
MSU also likes Swenson's teammate Geno Atkins, a 6-2, 270-pound defensive tackle with 4.95 speed. ATkins recorded 55 tackles including 12 for loss in leading his team to the 5A state title game. Atkins confirmed to Scout.com's Miller Safrit that he will visit East Lansing.
