Montgomery was a finalist for the position that went to Jay Smith, who resigned under pressure at the end of the regular season.
The Spartans could lose yet another assistant to the head coach ranks if Montgomery accepts the position. He has not been interviewed at this point and CMU AD Dave Heeke has said he will take his time before naming his finalists, but Montgomery is known to be among those under strong consideration.
He was an assistant coach at Central when they compiled an outstanding 20-8 record and a MAC regular season championship in 2001. The Inkster native played four years at MSU and helped the Spartans to a 1990 Big Ten Championship.
He played professionally in Europe before returning to the coaching ranks. A former Academic All-American, Montgomery is lauded for his teaching ability and his ability to communicate with today's players.
