North Carolina two-sport star in MSU's sights

While Smith would use Gilchrist as a defensive back, the senior standout is also adept on the hardwoods and could offer Izzo depth in the offensive backcourt without using up one of his precious scholarships

Tom Izzo could get an unexpected gift from football head coach John L. Smith. Smith is actively recruiting North Carolina cornerback Marcus Gilchrist, a 5-foot-11 senior from High Point. While Smith would use Gilchrist as a defensive back, the senior standout is also adept on the hardwoods and could offer Izzo depth in the offensive backcourt without using up one of his precious scholarships, Gilchrist would receive a full ride from the football team if he commits.

Gilchrist told Scout.com's Miller Safrit that he would make his commitment to one of five schools on July 7th, but that hasn't stopped the Spartans from barging in on the party to try to secure the services of one of the East's top corners.

"My decision is going to be based off of academics number one," said Gilchrist. "I plan on majoring in computer engineering. I already did my research on these schools, so I know how I will be if I graduated from (any of his top five) with a computer engineering degree.

Michigan State is hoping for a chance to show Gilchrist their college of engineering and their facilities. If they get a last minute shot, they just might be able to 'pull the snatch'.
