The Spartans have dominated this series and hold a 55-24-7 edge over the Broncos but the Brown and Gold won the last meeting of the two squads 5-3 and in the last five meetings the teams are dead even with a 2-2-1 slate.
MSU freshman forward Ryan Turek can hardly contain his excitement heading into the conference opener.
``I can't even say how excited I am and how ready I am to play especially knowing its Western," said Turek. ``Western's a school we have a good rivalry with and its a good one to start out with. I'm really excited that the season is starting and now these games are actually going on the record for points in the CCHA."
`` It's hard to put into words how exciting you are to be a freshman and play in your first CCHA hockey game," he said.
While MSU junior forward Bryan Lerg's four goal night against Wilfrid Laurier showed off the State firepower, the Broncos return top scorer Paul Szczechura, a senior forward who put up 40 points for Western a season ago.
The Spartans will be sporting their "1A" and "1B"lines with the junior trio of Lerg, Jim McKenzie and Chris Mueller on the "A" team while three sophomores, Justin Abdelkader, Tim Crowder and Tim Kennedy man the "B" line.
The series opens with a 7:05 tilt at Munn while the return contest will be in Kalamazoo with a 3:05 start time and will be televised on ESPNU.
