Spartans split series with Broncos

Michigan State split its opening series of the CCHA season, winning the opener 4-1 in the Munn Arena on Friday before falling 3-2 yesterday at Lawson Arena in Kalamazoo.

DETROIT - Michigan State split its opening series of the CCHA season, winning the opener 4-1 in the Munn Arena on Friday before falling 3-2 yesterday at Lawson Arena.

Western Michigan Mark Letestu opened the scoring for the Broncos taking a pass from Brian Bicek to give the Brown-and-Gold a 1-0 lead. The period ended at 1-1 when the Spartans Jim McKenzie scored on the power play from freshman Mike Ratchuk.

The Broncos Jeff LoVecchio put the Broncos up in the second period from Matt Clackson. State tied it up early in the third period with Nick Sucharski on a beautiful rush connected on a falling backhander to beat WMU goaltender Dan Bellissimo.

Western's Mike Lesperance banged in a rebound pass State goalie Jeff Lerge for the 3-2 advantage and the Broncos made it stand up.

The Spartans '09 line (all sophomores) dominated the contest at Munn. Justin Abdelkader, Tim Crowder and Tim Kennedy all scored for the Spartans who cruised to an easy 4-1 win. Abdelkader started the scoring on a pass Kennedy. Bryan Lerg upped the lead to 2-0 on a pass from Ratchuk.

Pesky Mark Letestu rammed home a one-time to get the Broncos back in it at 2-1 before Crowder connected on a pass from Kennedy to get it to 3-1 before Kennedy returned the favor, putting the game away.

MSU next faces the US National Development Program team in an exhibition on Thursday. They then take the week off before hosting St. Lawrence on Friday November 27th and Sacred Heart on Saturday November 28th.
