Forward Jim McKenzie scored with just over one minute left in the contest to give MSU the margin of victory in a 4-2 win over Nebraska-Omaha in the opener of the best of three series.

EAST LANSING -Forward Jim McKenzie scored with one minute left in the contest to give MSU the margin of victory in a 4-2 win over Nebraska-Omaha in the opener of the best of three series.

McKenzie's tally broke open a 2-2 late in the game and sophomore goaltender Jeff Lerg's 23 saves made it stand up.

The win was Lerg's fifth consecutive CCHA playoff victory. For State sophomore forward Nick Sucharski and freshman forward Jay Sprague notched goals for the Green-and-White.

Nebraska-Omaha rallied after being down 2-0 in what looked like a walk in the park for MSU. With less than five minute remaining Dan Knapp scored on the power play, followed by junior forward Mick Lawrence tying the game just 43 seconds later.

Lawrence's goal set up McKenzie's heroics for MSU. Bryan Lerg, who leads the CCHA in game-winning goals, added an empty netter for the final margin of victory.

MSU and UNO will go at it again tonight at Munn with the Spartans looking to close out the Mavericks.
