Crean waxed poeetic about the days of when as a graduate assistant he rented a room in Tom Izzo's house and was 'getting ripped off' by his former boss who charged him $200 a montIh.
"I don't think you can," said Crean when asked if he would put all his eggs into stopping Neitzel. As good as he is, they're very good." "Raymar Morgan is capable - can you imagine if he hadn't had the injury where he would be at in the national scope of things."
"Travis Walton is excellent, we recruited him so we're very familiar with him. (Goran) Suton has improved leaps and bounds.
(Drew) Naymick knows exactly what he's supposed to do, Marquise Gray, if you step up on a screen and Marquise Gray is anywhere near the rim, it's going to be a dunk that's going to end up on someone's highlight show. As good as Drew is, you can not get away from how good they are," said Crean.
On the other side, Izzo talked about how good Crean's program at Marquette is. "Just a couple of weeks ago, they were ranked 12th or 13th, so its going to be a challenge for us. They are well coached, they run a lot of things, they have great guard play and a lot of the staples we have they have," admitted Izzo who then switched it around saying "or that they have, we have."
In his weekly press conference Izzo said he doesn't at all enjoy playing a former assistant and especially one like Crean, but the two had a feeling that it could happen.
Still Izzo said, he would not schedule such a game, but that the NCAA scheduled it for them. The coach said while he understands the angle, he wants to downplay the Crean vs. Izzo storyline.
"You won't see anybody come out with 'Crean' on their uniform and nobodies going to come out with 'Izzo' on their uniform, it'll be Michigan State against Marquette and the players deserve to play the game and that's the way it'll be played," said Izzo.
Regarding the Golden Eagles Izzo said "This is a good basketball team, they're a guard oriented team in some ways. Losing (Jerel) McNeal hurts them some, but just as we say that the two guys who've kind of replaced him each get 20 (points) in back-to-back games, especially (Dan) Fitzgerald, he gives them another dimension where he extends the defense.
"I think the key to them is they're a good penetrating team. Tom's done a great job with their fast break, they blitz, they break, they run constantly and (Dominic) James is as good a guy pushing it up the floor as I've seen."
"Stopping penetration is going to be a major part of the game plan," said Izzo "and handling their pick and rolls and yet all in all, I think it's two teams that mirror each other in a lot of ways."
