Fred Smith Has MSU on Short List

DETROIT, MI - Look for Fred Smith [PLAYER PROFILE | VIDEO ] to be among the most highly recruited players in the Midwest this season. The 6-foot-3, 215-pound two-sport star has scouts salivating over his combination of size and 4.4 speed.

The Southeastern Jungaleers standout says he has five teams currently on his short list. "Michigan, Michigan State, Iowa, Ohio State and USC," said Smith when asked who were his top five.

Smith said MSU's running backs coach Dan Enos is the lead recruiter for his services and that he was impressed with him. "He told me that Michigan State knows how to get the ball to their wide receivers," said Smith.

Smith said he attended Michigan State's junior day and a practice and came away impressed with what he saw. "They said they thought that I could fit in well (with what they are doing."

The two-sport star who averaged over 20 points per game for Southeastern in basketball says he intends to concentrate on only football at the next level, but says he "rather play on offense" when asked if he had a preference. He did say he would still consider a school that wanted him to play defense, depending on the situation.

Smith said he has visits set up to Iowa (April 14) and Ohio State (April 21) and would set up his official visits to Michigan State and Michigan later.

He said while he would like to visit USC he's leaving that one visit open at this time.
