Caulton Ray: "I'm looking at..."

With the need for at least one running back in the class of 2008, the Michigan State Spartans have targeted Brother Rice tail back Caulton Ray as a possible option after his strong performance at the Spartans one day camp. As the summer nears an end, Ray is ready to name a leader as he nears a decision on where to continue his football days.

With over 1100 yards and 11 touchdowns during his junior season, Brother Rice running back Caulton Ray is starting to make waves on the recruiting circuit. Despite a slow start to the recruiting process, things are now moving along nicely as a leader has emerged in the race for Caulton Ray.

"Michigan State is standing out real nice right now. As of right now, Michigan State is No. 1," Ray said. "I went to Michigan State for the one day camp and they offered me the next day. It was the one day camp on the 22nd of June. It was good. The first day I was up there for camp and worked hard. I got a chance to get to know my recruiting coordinator there because he's actually the running backs coach. We still talk a lot."

With a unique blend of vision and speed, it's easy to see why the Spartans remain in contact. New NCAA rules, however, limit current contact between the Michigan State coaches and the talented 5-foot-9, 190-pound speedster, so the Spartans are doing all they can to remain in the driver seat of his recruiting.

"I talked to them on July 29th, right before the new rule that says that they can't text me anymore," Ray continued. "And I E-mailed them a couple of days ago.

"They told me they have a couple of backs graduating and are looking to take one this year. I'd have a good chance to compete, and I think I could do well in their new I-back set."

With a firm leader in mind, and the Spartans recruiting momentum over the past week, the next time the Spartans hear back from Ray could be the charm. While hoping for another visit to East Lansing before making a decision, Ray also indicated to GSN that his decision could be in the not too distant future.

"I really like the new facilities; they got a lot going on. They'll have everything built with the new weight rooms and new buildings right when I'd be coming in."

"I'd like to commit before the season. I might just get it out of the way before the season, I'm not sure yet. I'm currently looking at Michigan State, Michigan, Cincinnati, Central Michigan, Miami of Ohio and Akron. I've been offered a scholarship by all of them except Michigan."
