EAST LANSING - The Michigan State Sports Information office has confirmed that Kaleb Thornhill, Jehuu Caulcrick, Peter Clifford, and Travis Key were voted captains through a team vote.
Many fans expected Thornhill to be a Spartan captain; his brother Josh was also a linebacker and a two time Spartan captain. His father, Charles, was an All-Big Ten linebacker in the 1960s.
Coaches have looked to Caulcrick to be a leader through the spring and summer camp. The senior brings a quiet but intense demeanor to the offense and with the running game a likely emphasis this season, he'll have a more visible role on and off the field.
Clifford, who has bounced around on the offensive line, has been a leader away from the gridiron. He was an Academic All-Big Ten selection as a freshman and sophomore.
And perhaps the biggest surprise is Key, who himself has been a two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection. The strong safety is a former walk-on.
