EAST LANSING - Heading into his first season as head coach of Michigan State, most pundits said the best Mark Dantonio could do would be 6-6. Michigan would challenge for a National Championship and Ohio State and Notre Dame would be top-10 teams.
Well don't look now, but the Spartans sport a 2-0 record, Ohio State struggled to whip Akron, last week and Michigan and Notre Dame are both looking for their first wins.
So with all the upsets and the preseason predictions out the window, GSN felt it was time to take another look at the schedule in front of the Spartans.
With their expected wins over UAB and Bowling Green, MSU heads into a home contest vs. Pittsburgh who will run out a redshirt freshman quarterback after losing their starter.
With Notre Dame reeling and a tough game against Michigan looming, it isn't out of the question that the Spartans, who historically play well in South Bend, could drop Notre Dame and move to 4-0 on the season.
If that happens, MSU would open up the season in what would shape up as a battle of the unbeatens against Wisconsin, but it's hard to imagine MSU coming out of Badgerland with a win, so let's call it 4-1.
Even so, with conference doormat Northwestern up next, followed by homecoming agaisnt Indiana, MSU could conceivably line up 6-1 before hitting the meat of their schedule on the road at Columbus and in Iowa City.
What if MSU could salvage a split? Wouldn't it be great to see a 7-2 or even a 6-3 State team hosting Michigan as the favorite?
No doubt head coach Mark Dantonio and his staff don't even want to think that far ahead, but at this point, 6-1 seems very much in the picture for a surprising Spartans team that would love to be the biggest surprise of this Big Ten season.
