Spartan Victory Would be Historic

A win at South Bend would make Spartan Head Coach Mark Dantonio's first four games the most successful in team history. As Notre Dame struggles to avoid its own historic marks for futility, Michigan State players insist the milestone for Coach Dantonio only matters in that it would be another victory for a resurgent Spartan program.

EAST LANSING - If Michigan State wins this Saturday at Notre Dame, history will be made.

First of all, a win would mark the sixth consecutive time the Spartans have marched to South Bend for a victory. No other team can claim as much against the second winningest team in college football history.

While the Irish hold the overall series advantage at 44-25-1, the Green & White have won 12 games in South Bend throughout the storied rivalry. In their history, the Irish have only lost 91 games at home, meaning that 13% of those losses have come at the hands of Michigan State.

"I guess history is on our side," said Mark Dantonio at his weekly press conference.

Another sad milestone for Notre Dame concerns a record for Irish futility to start a season. At no point in their long history have they opened a season 0-4, not under Bob Davies, not under Ty Willingham, not ever.

But when it comes to the Spartans, the most significant accomplishment of the day, aside from a simple victory, concerns the early success of Dantonio. With their own history dating back into the nineteenth century, Michigan State has never had a head coach reach 4-0 in his first season leading the team. Not Clarence "Biggie" Munn. Not Duffy Daugherty. Neither George Perles nor Nick Saban.

"It'd be a good patch to have on his jacket," said safety and captain Travis Key of the mark Dantonio could set. "But we're just going to focus on one game at a time and our goal is to win every game."

Fellow captain Jehuu Caulcrick seconds the idea that all the Spartans really need is a W.

"Big deal for (Dantonio)? It'd be a big deal for . . . all of us collectively." Caulcrick said. "In the beginning of the season we set our goals to win a championship here, and that's just another step to winning a championship. Him being the first coach to win his first four is just an added bonus."
