The win was Michigan State's first conference road win all season and gave the Spartans their sixth win, making them bowl eligible, but not assured of a bowl bid without a seventh win next week in the season finale against Penn State.
The Spartans took an early 7-0 lead when Brian Hoyer(23-of-32 for 271, 2TDs) hit Devin Thomas for a 30-yard gain setting MSU up at the Purdue 18-yard line. Four plays later Hoyer rushed in from a yard out.
Purdue bounced back with a 27-yard Painter scramble for a touchdown to tie the score.
On Purdue's next possession, Painter was picked off by Adams who returned it to the PU 3-yard line. Hoyer hit Kellen Davis from 2-yards out for another MSU lead. However, Kory Sheet burst off right tackle for a 59-yard TD to tie the score.
MSU put together a seven-play drive culminating in a Jehuu Caulcrick 2-yard TD run. But Painter led the Boilers right back, running in from 7-yards out to tie it at 21. But Brian Hoyer wouldn't be outdone, completing five straight passes before Caulcrick's (24 carries, 78 yards, 2 TDs) 1-yard dive gave MSU a seven point lead.
Adams picked off Painter again and Brett Swenson converted it into three with a 39-yard field goal to end the half.
It wasn't until late in the third quarter when Chris Summers' 32-yard field goal got PU within seven. However, Swenson matched Summers with a 23-yarder to put MSU back up by ten.
But it was in the fourth quarter when Painter hit Dorien Bryant on an outroute, Bryant fumbled and Travis Key scooped the ball and raced 20-yard for the touchdown giving MSU an insurmountable 17-point lead at 41-24.
Painter added one more TD hitting Sheets for a 41-yard score to cut the lead to ten, but MSU put together an 11-play, 65 yard drive, eating 5:29 off the clock when Hoyer hit tight end Eric Andino for a 3-yard TD to give MSU the 17-point final margin.
"We got some key turnovers, I thought our offense responded in the second half and had some good drives, it was a team win," said MSU head coach Mark Dantonio.
FoxSports.com predicts MSU will gain a bid to the Motor City Bowl if, the Spartans win next week or no seven win team is eligible for the game.
