Dantonio isn't messing around. He's taking a shoot for the moon mentality in hopes of landing some star players who can impact MSU fortunes.
Last night, GSN's Associate Editor Joe Torok reported that both Detroit King defensive end Nick Perry and Flint Southwestern running back Mark Ingram, two of the top recruits in the state were in the building for the MSU vs. Ohio State contest.
MSU coach Tom Izzo loves to get into the mix in helping recruit talented players to the University. His presence around the players couldn't be anything but helpful as was having the knowledgable "Izzone" chanting "We Want Perry".
Meanwhile, Dantonio will catch a flight to New Jersey to visit big time defensive end Marcus Witherspoon of Absecon (NJ) Holy Spirit. Witherspoon committed to Michigan back in June, but hasn't heard much from the new staff until about a week ago. Now UM is trying to get back on this talented player who's having second thoughts.
Dantonio will have plenty of competition for Witherspoon's services as he will also have in-school visits from Pete Carroll (USC), Joe Paterno (Penn State), Greg Schiano (Rutgers), Phillip Fulmer (Tennessee), and Rich Rodriguez (Michigan) according to Spartans coach Bill Walsh.
Witherspoon led the state of New Jersey with 102 tackles and 27 sacks from his linebacker position, stunning numbers that show that he is an impact player.
The fact that MSU is in the running for these outstanding players like Perry, Witherspoon and Ingram at this late date shows that MSU is serious about turning the tide. Will they nab any of these stars?
Stay tuned to GSN.
