Mark Dantonio is racking up miles before signing day next month, visiting standout players like St. Xavier (Cincinnati) defensive end prospect Greg Scruggs.
"Coach Dantonio was at school yesterday," Scruggs said. "It went real well, we talked for about 45 minutes to an hour. It went really well.
"I think (Dantonio) is a good person," he continued. "He talked to me about how he wanted to develop me as a person both on and off the field, as a person and a player."
In addition to Michigan State, where he plans to visit Jan. 25, Scruggs named, "in no particular order," the other four schools in his top-five: Tennessee, Wake Forest, North Carolina State and Louisville.
At 6-foot-5 and 234-pounds, Scruggs says he has little problem bulking up: "My body easily puts on weight."
He is open to red-shirting in his first collegiate season, but the decision could be determined by how big he enters fall camp. "It all depends on how much weight I gain during summer workouts. I don't doubt that I could put on 10 to 15 pounds easily."
A dual threat in high school, Scruggs has been offered by one team to play as a tight end, however defensive end is where he sees himself at the next level.
Although he didn't watch many Michigan State games on television this fall, when he did tune in, it was an offensive weapon that caught his eye: tight end Kellen Davis.
"I always got caught up in him, instead of watching how the defensive ends played," he said with a laugh. And he made sure to catch one Spartan game in particular.
"I did watch the bowl game, because Greg Jones, he graduated from right down the street from me," he said. Scruggs, who self-reports a 4.67 in the 40-yard dash, added that he enjoyed watching the aggressive pass-rushing scheme deployed by the Spartans in the Champs Sports Bowl, and explained how the play of the D-ends appealed to him. "I liked what I saw."
