Spartan Family Welcomes Baker

"It was kind of fun to talk to everybody, let everybody know where I'm going," Edwin Baker said about announcing his verbal commitment to Michigan State. "Let all the Spartan fans know that they have a new family member coming to the team."

For Edwin Baker, the choice to verbally commit to Michigan State was easy. He was convinced after he learned what's important to the coaching staff last weekend.

"The thing that convinced me was . . . how the coaching staff made me feel like family," he said. "It feels real good."

Head coach Mark Dantonio often speaks of building trust between himself and recruits. Was that a part of their conversations?

"Yes he did, he talked to me about that a lot," Baker said, noting Dantonio's straightforwardness. "When he first met me, he said, 'My word is all I have'."

With an early commitment, there could be pressure form other programs to make a switch. Does he think it will be difficult resisting offers made by other schools in the future?

"I don't think it'd be hard because I'm a man of my word, so it wouldn't be hard for me at all," Baker said.

After the graduation of Javon Ringer next season, the running back position will be up for grabs. Does Baker anticipate bringing a focused mindset early on in his career and competing for playing time?

"Yes I do," he said. "Their offense is kind of similar to ours that we run at Oak Park, that's why I feel it's also a great fit for me to go there."

He adds, "I'm a great competitor, so I'm going to do my best to prove to the coaches they recruited a great guy and a guy that's going to try to go to the next level."

That means constantly working hard on his skills and thinking about ways to get better. He'll be looking to improve an already-sharp eye on the gridiron as he prepares for the college game.

"Practically saying, to improve my game, I'd say my cutback ability. I want to make my cuts as soon as I should," he said. He explains his focus in one word: "Vision."

Baker said he has enjoyed the opportunity to announce his early decision and embraces the Spartan community with open arms.

"I kind of enjoyed it, it was kind of fun to talk to everybody, let everybody know where I'm going," he said. "Let all the Spartan fans know that they have a new family member coming to the team."
