MSU Visit Impresses Benton

The Spartans hosted Shamari Benton on campus over the weekend and talked about a potential scholarship with the talented safety prospect. Read on to hear what coach Mark Dantonio told him about an offer, where Benton sees the Green and White program headed and more.

The long awaited arrival of safety prospect Shamari Benton finally took place at the most recent Michigan State Junior Day this past Sunday.

After visiting Michigan on the Thursday before, Benton was ready to make his inaugural visit to East Lansing, and he came away impressed with the coaching staff — and the direction the program is heading in.

"(Coach Mark Dantonio ) is a great coach," Benton said, "he got (MSU) to a bowl game last year, and I'm pretty sure he's going to get them to a National Championship before it's all said and done."

The confidence in the coaching staff is one of the many reasons Benton is attracted to MSU. His familiarity with several of current and future Spartans has also caught the Birmingham Brother Rice standout's eye.

"Getting all of the in-state recruits has really boosted them up in my view. Me and Chris Norman are really good friends and we both play defense," he said. "Even my coach, Coach (Al) Fracasa, he's from Michigan State."

Not only is Benton familiar with the roster, he also appreciates the close ties that MSU and Brother Rice share and would like to be a part of something special.

"Brother Rice has close ties with Michigan State and I'd like to carry on the tradition," he said, adding, "I really do like Michigan State."

While Benton likes MSU quite a bit, it seems as though he will have to wait to receive an offer. Benton said that he will be attending a one-day camp so the Spartan coaches can see that he will be able to make the transition from his current position of outside linebacker to his recruited position of safety.

"(Dantonio) wants me to come in for the one-day camp just to show him that I can play the safety position like he wants me to," said Benton. "Then he'll offer me."

The Green and White's primary competition for Benton's services are currently Ohio State and Michigan, but once his junior highlight tapes make the rounds, many more offers can be expected.
