DENVER, CO - Chris Allen didn't shoot the greatest of percentages in Michigan State's 72-61 win over Temple, but he did something he has been reluctant to do all season, keep shooting the basketball. Allen's 12 points off the bench was one of the keys to Michigan State first round victory. Allen went 4-of-11 from the field including 2-of-5 from three point range and 2-for-2 from the free throw line to help Michigan State build a lead of as many as 18 points over the Owls.
"It's important for our present and our future," Izzo said when asked about the contribution of Allen, along with freshmen Durrell Summers and Kalin Lucas.
"There were nine or 10 guys that were responsible for this win," Izzo said. No doubt that included Allen.
Michigan State will need the freshmen to continue to contribute if they're going to advance pass this weekend.
Allen's shooting gives the Spartans another option when team's concentrate on taking away senior shooting guard Drew Neitzel. Allen, at 6-foot-5 is able to shoot over smaller players and creates mismatches out on the perimeter.
He also in deceptively quick and able to guard smaller players without constantly giving up drives to the basket.
Michigan State will take on #4 seed Pittsburgh who easily defeated Oral Roberts 82-63 in the opening round of the South Regional behind 23 points from guard Levance Fields.
