Maxwell and the Midland Chemics lost to a resilient and tested Davison squad 25-19 in a Division 2 match up in the MHSAA playoffs.
Maxwell looked tremendous in the first half, throwing for two touchdowns and leading Midland down the field in the final two minutes for a quick-strike score.
But Davison proved to be too much with an opportunistic defense and an offense that just ground Midland down. Oliver Saylor took Davison on his back in the fourth quarter with the Cardinals up by two scores and rushed at least five crucial minutes off the clock.
Maxwell led a late charge, throwing a 33-yard touchdown pass with under a minute remaining in the game, but the ensuing onside kick was snagged by Davison, who lined up in victory formation to take a final knee.
After the game, Maxwell expressed disappointment at not being able to make an early debut in Spartan Stadium, where Davison advances to in next week's semifinals.
GSN caught up with Maxwell on the field to hear about the fond memories he's had on the prep gridiron and what the next step is in his transformation from a Chemic to a Spartan.
