Jersey DE has Favorites

Michigan State boasts four Garden State linemen on its roster. Will Jersey native Bernardo Nunez replace the departing Jesse Miller to keep the number even? GSN caught up with the defensive end, one of a handful of student-athletes at that position being actively recruited by the Green & White.

Bernardo Nunez, a whirlwind defensive end from Hoboken, N.J., has favorites as the 2009 recruiting cycle heads into its final days.

"I have, actually, a top-3," he told GSN. "Maryland, Pittsburgh and Michigan State."

He has officially visited with the Terps and will visit Pittsburgh a week before he comes to East Lansing on Jan. 16. He says it's truly a three horse race.

But MSU has been consistent. Defensive coordinator Pat Narduzzi has been Nunez's primary recruiter, traveling to the coast to meet him in person.

"We've had a lot of good conversations both here and on the phone," Nunez said.

As for the program, what does a Jersey kid think of Michigan State football? "They're a great team, they're playing another great team (Georgia) in their bowl," he said. "Great conference, the Big Ten, tough conference. Play a lot of good teams."

Nunez will be looking at the academic structure of the football program on his visit, what kinds of resources the college offers and how well it assists busy student-athletes.

Nunez's film () shows an aggressive athlete who displays tons of potential as a rush specialist, but seems to play the run just as well. And that was as a sophomore.

[By the way, besides Jesse Miller (Somerville, N.J.), the other three Jersey linemen on the MSU roster are Mike Schmeding (Rutherford, N.J.), Ishmyl Johnson (Rahway, N.J.), and Oren Wilson (Teaneck, N.J.)]
