Dion Sims Verbally Commits To Michigan State

Michigan State coaches Mark Dantonio and Tom Izzo joined forces to grab one of the most talented two-sport stars in recent memory as Orchard Lake St. Mary's star Dion Sims becomes the 18th verbal commitment for Michigan State

EAST LANSING - After putting on the full court press in more ways than one this weekend, Michigan State got what they wanted, a verbal commitment from Orchard Lake St. Mary's star Dion Sims.

Sims, 6-foot-8, 235-pounds, plays defensive end and tight end for the Eaglets, while also starring on the basketball court as one of the top candidates for the Hal Schram Mr. Basketball award as the top player in the state.

The Sims family raved about the visit over the weekend. "Everything was absolutely top notch. Both Coach Dantonio and Coach Izzo made us feel comfortable and they put all their cards on the table," said Don Sims, Dion's father.

"They let us know what the situation was with the scholarships and while our family really appreciated the first class way that the University of Miami treated us throughout the recruitment process, in the end, Dion felt he found a place where he could really feel comfortable," Sims said.

After the Eaglets game this evening against Birmingham Brother Rice, Sims had reached his decision. He called Miami head coach Randy Shannon and offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland to tell them how much he appreciated the way they treated him throughout the recruitment process.

Then he spoke exclusively to GoSpartans.net to break his commitment. Sims then went on to speak to other media to let them also know about his decision.

In the end, the difference was the joint effort of Coaches Dantonio and Izzo, and their willingness to work with the Sims family to allow Dion his dream of attempting to play both sports at the next level.

While Dantonio and his staff did an excellent job of selling the Sims family on the future of the football program, this commitment likely would not have happened without Izzo and his interest in the recruitment.

GSN will have an exclusive video interview with Dion Sims who will tell Spartans fans why his recruitment took so long, how his injury on the field affected him, how he felt about the University of Miami and being able to fulfill his wish of playing both sports at the collegiate level.

To whet your appetite of Sims on the basketball court.
