GoSpartans.net had begun following up a lead received Friday evening that Jones, the son of former Detroit Lions fullback James Jones, had cancelled all of his other official visits with the intent of making his desire to be a Spartan official.
Calls to the Jones family were not immediately returned, but GSN continued to press for confirmation until the St. Petersburg (FL) Times reported what GSN believed to be true in a copywritten story late yesterday morning that indeed Jones had committed.
The get is a great one for Mark Dantonio as he continues to add talent upon talent to a great 2009 class. Jones projects to the critical safety position for Michigan State where the team has had some losses due to the graduation of Otis Wiley and due to some attrition in the program.
Playing for Wharton last year, Jones recorded an astounding 188 tackles along with four interceptions. On the offensive side of the ball he has 842 yards rushing and scored 12 touchdowns, but it is clear, that his future is as a safety for the Spartans. He was selected All-Hillsborough County and First Team All-Suncoast.
Jones is an extremely bright student, posting a 3.0 core GPA and a 960 SAT.
GoSpartans.net's Joe Torok has talked to Jones on numerous occasions and got an inkling early last week that Jones was thinking of pulling the trigger for State.
What are your feelings on the 22nd member of the Michigan State recruiting class. Post your thoughts in Joe's "Football Blog in the Spartans Insight" message board?
