(EAST LANSING, MI)- - New MSU head coach John L. Smith finished assembling his coaching staff by retaining coaches Reggie Mitchell, Jeff Stoutland and three others while bring five coaches from his Louisville staff.
Director of football operations Mike Vollmar and strength and conditioning coaches Ken Mannie and Aaron Wellman were retained.
Smith explained he needed Mitchell's presence in the Flint and Saginaw area (read Lamarr Woodley) while Stoutland was MSU's main presence in the talent rich Pennsylvania area. "Jeff Stoutland is another quality coach who provides us with a recruiting 'in' on the East Coast. My staff hasn't gotten its feet wet in that area of the country, so Jeff fills that need."
Regarding Mitchell Smith said, "Reggie Mitchell is kind of our savior. Reggie is a key figure for our program because he knows recruiting in the state of Michigan. We must be able to recruit successfully in our backyard before we go anywhere else."
Coming over from Louisville are defensive coordinator and safeties coach Chris Smeland, linebackers coach Mike Cox, cornerbacks coach Paul Haynes, wide receivers and special teams coach Jim McElwain and defensive line coach Steve Stripling.
Smeland will become defensive coordinator for the Spartans while either McElwain or Mitchell will be named offensive coordinator.
Not surprisingly Pat Perles, son of former MSU Spartan head coach George Perles, was not retained despite his work recruiting for the Spartans.
