Michigan State Set Up Nicely For '09-10

Incoming freshman Derrick Nix of State Champion Detroit Pershing could provide important depth for the Spartans but expect guards Durrell Summers and Chris Allen to play a much more important role in '09 and '10.

DETROIT - Even as the curtain comes down on a super successful Michigan State '08-'09 basketball season, a look ahead reveals the Spartans are in great position to make another run next season.

While Michigan State loses seniors Goran Suton, Idong Ibok, Marquise Gray and Travis Walton, there are those ready to step up and assume their respective leadership roles.

Redshirt sophomore Tom Herzog should step nicely into the role vacated by Ibok. Freshman Draymond Green already has moved into the role of the big physical power forward that Izzo loves, while incoming freshman forward Garrick Sherman from Kenton, OH looks ready to contribute early.

Replacing the shooting, passing and scoring Suton bring appear to be a different story, but super talent Delvon Roe appeared to get better and better and show flashes of what he could become down the road.

Perhaps just as important, Coach Izzo has two super talent on the horizon in Russell Byrd of Ft. Wayne Blackhawk Christian and Keith Appling of Detroit Pershing incoming in 2010 and another scholarship in his hip pocket to offer.

Michigan State isn't going anywhere.
