The No. 14 Spartans and the No. 11 Oklahoma Sooners battled back and forth for 40 minutes, but it still wasnt enough for MSU.
The Sooners (8-2) outmatched MSU 60-58 in the Touchstone Energy All-College Classic in Oklahoma City on Saturday.
The Spartans (8-4) had a chance to tie or possibly win the game with 14 seconds left, but failed to get a shot off. The loss was the second straight for the Spartans.
Oklahoma was led by the dynamic duo of Ebi Ere and Hollis Price. Ere scored a game-high 21 points, while Price dropped in 19. Sophomore guard Chris Hill and freshman guard Maurice Ager shared scoring honors for the Spartans with 12 apiece.
In a battle of two great defensive teams, each team fought on every possession to get the open shot. Throughout the game, Oklahoma was able to stretch the lead to seven or eight, but the Spartans always answered.
With 2:44 left on the clock, the Sooners used two offensive rebounds to wind the clock down to a 1:20, before turning the ball over on a shot clock violation.
The Spartans with a chance to cut the lead or tie the game, turned the ball over with a little over a minute to go. After an Oklahoma split from the line, Ager knocked down a 3-point shot to close to lead to 59-58 with 17.4 seconds left.
The Spartans went on an 8-1 run during a 4-minute span to cut the lead to one.
Oklahomas Quannas White was fouled on the ensuing inbounds play. White hit the first free shot and missed the second.
MSU took the ball down the court down 60-58, but after failing to find an open man and almost committing a turnover, the ball went into the hands of Hill with four seconds left, who then had it knocked away by White.
The two teams were physical from the beginning. There was a combined 22 fouls in the first half and 24 free throws. Both teams finished with 18 fouls apiece.
Oklahoma took what the Spartans gave them, knocking down 15-of-21 of its free throws. Price was 10-of-11 from the line.
Turnovers and missed free throws plagued the Spartans and ultimately led them to the loss. MSU will open the Big Ten season against Ohio State on Thursday in East Lansing.
