(EAST LANSING, MI)--The recruiting efforts of new MSU head coach John L. Smith are paying off. The Spartans received a verbal commitment over the weekend from Poland Seminary (Ohio) quarterback Sean Clayton.
Clayton, 6' 5" 230, was named to the AP first team Division III All State squad in Ohio and was named Division III offensive player of the year. As a junior Clayton passed for nearly 2,000 yards and ran for almost 400 more for an 11-2 Metro Atlantic Conference squad.
Clayton completed 61 percent of his passes and connected on more than 20 touchdown passes. He is considered to be one of the top 5 quarterbacks in Ohio. Despite his size, Clayton proves to be agile recordin a 40-yard time of 4.7 seconds.
The choice of MSU seems very interesting, since Clayton didn't even have MSU as one of his top 5 choices. Virginia, Maryland, Akron and Miami (Ohio) were all considered frontrunners. Clayton is the fifth recruit to verbally commit to MSU, the second under Smith.
