Rated the number six running back in the nation, Smith mentioned that Tennessee has recently joined the race for his services and made a strong impression.
He reiterated that he'll be in East Lansing soon.
"Sometime in the next three or four weeks," said Smith "I'll be up for a visit, but I'm not sure if I'm going to camp or not."
What is the Michigan State coaching staff, led by recruiter Don Treadwell, telling Smith about how he'd fit in?
"He's telling me that I'm a perfect fit for the program and they liked the way I run the ball. They're saying to stay focused and make sure that I do what I need to do to get there," said Smith.
So what's he think of the Spartans?
"So far, I haven't had a chance to go down there, but I've been liking their running game and the way they're program is run by the head coach and I just really like them."
Smith says although he hasn't gotten on campus, he has watched the way the Spartans featured great backs like departed senior Javon Ringer and he liked it a lot.
"Obviously the running back is an important part of their offense and that's what I like and that's where I think I can fit in."
Smith says he doesn't have a top-five but... "Standing out right now, I would say Ohio State, Michigan State and Tennessee."
As for his plans for the summer, Smith said "We don't get out of school until next Monday. Then I'm going to just be on football conditioning and that's pretty much it, football and trying to get a (summer) job."
GSN's take: Smith's status as the #6 back in the nation puts him high atop MSU's wish list. What is interesting is that Smith intends, at least as of this date at only one place, Ohio State.
Still, even with an OSU offer present, he hasn't pulled the trigger and plans to visit East Lansing.
The way we see it, you'd have to put Ohio State slightly above Michigan State and Tennessee right now, but both schools will have their chances as Smith plans to see both this summer.
Can the Spartans pull this one out and land arguably the Midwest's top running back? They'll have to pull the upset but don't count MSU out.
