Michigan State's coaches and players spoke to the media yesterday and GoSpartans.net was on hand to capture all the action.

EAST LANSING - Big Ten preseason defensive player of the year, Greg Jones, spoke to GoSpartans.net about his role in the defense as a vocal leader and an impact player.

While he was happy with the selection, he doesn't put too much stock into it.

"That's just preseason," Jones said matter of factly. "Me living up to that, is just getting better in the pass rush and last year I didn't create a whole lot of turnovers, so I just want to remain a factor on the field.

"I know last year I wasn't on the radar, this year, I am a little more. It's not just me, I'm not out there by myself, there are ten other guys out there with me and we're all working together."

Jones knows he need to make plays for the Spartans defense to be successful, and he talked to GSN about how he intends to do that.

"I'm trying to be a better tackler and be better in the fourth quarter so that we can win close games," said Jones. Also, we have a lot of guys returning, so (the defense) doesn't have to worry about what we have to do, we want to be more "football aware" of what the offense is trying to do to us this year.

Jones says the defense has a point of emphasis.

(Working) together and trying to communicate. Make sure everybody points out what they see so that we can all work together, because when we do that we can play very, very well."

He also talked about the expectations that this Spartans team faces that other have not, being picked to finish third in the conference by the media.

"Guys are really excited (about the expectations) but we don't really look at the hype, we just want to stay focused. "We don't want to let something on the outside, affect us (here) on the inside."
