The win, coupled with one next week, could send the Spartans (6-5) to a January 2nd date in the Valero Alamo Bowl against the Oklahoma Sooners (6-4) who wracked up 640 yards of offense behind quarterback Landry Jones in a 65-10 rout of Texas A&M to also become bowl eligible.
MSU would likely be the choice of the bowl if they defeat Penn State in the annual Land Grant Trophy game against Penn State. If the Spartans fall to the Nittany Lions next week to finish 6-6, they might be headed to the Insight Bowl to face a Big 12 team, likely Missouri.
Iowa could nab an at-large BCS bid if it beats Minnesota next week. Minnesota could head to the Champs Sports Bowl or the Little Caesars bowl but not the Insight bowl because of their appearance in last year's game.
Penn State (9-2) and Wisconsin (8-2) will grab berths in the Capital One bowl and the Outback bowl depending on their finishes.
Here's our conference bowl projections at this point:
Rose: Ohio State v. Oregon
Fiesta: Iowa v TCU
Capital One: Wisconsin v LSU
Outback : Penn State v Tennessee
Alamo: Northwestern v. Oklahoma
Champs: Minnesota v Virginia Tech
Insight: Michigan State v Oklahoma State Little Caesars: Central Michigan v At Large
The wildcard that could upset the apple cart would be an unlikely upset of conference champion Ohio State by Michigan (5-6).
A Michigan win would vault them into the Champs Sports Bowl and knock Minnesota into the Little Caesars bowl.
