Roundball Recruits

2003 Class

Shannon Brown – 6'3" 190 lbs. SG (Proviso East High School, Maywood, Ill.). Mr. Brown had quite a memorable week. A week ago Saturday, he scored 29 points on 20-of-21 shooting from the free throw line to lead the Pirates to a victory over rival Proviso West. Then just two days ago his team went up against the No. 1 ranked West Aurora, dropping a 71-69 overtime decision. Brown finished the game with 38 points on 14-of-22 shooting from the field. He was 5-of-9 from behind the arc and also dished out two assists and had two steals. And not to mention he did all of this in front of MSU head coach Tom Izzo, who made the trip to Evanston, Ill., after beating Northwestern at home earlier that day. West Aurora was led by senior Dameon Mason, who finished with 34 points, 8 rebounds and four assists. Both he and Brown are legitimate contenders for Illinois's Mr. Basketball. The No.4 Pirates record now stands at 21-2.

Brandon Cotton – 6'0" 170 lbs. PG (Detroit St. Martin DePorres, Southfield, MI). Cotton had another huge game on Sunday, scoring 30 points and leading DePorres to a 70-39 win over Harper Woods Notre Dame in the Catholic League quarterfinals. DePorres remains undefeated at 17-0 and still holds the honor of the No. 1 class C school in Michigan.

Drew Naymick – 6'10" 224 lbs. F/C (North Muskegon High School, Muskegon, MI). Naymick scored 13 points and dished out five assists to guide the Norsemen to a 44-22 win over Whitehall. Whitehall used stalling tactics most of the game, but could not get past Naymick or two of his over teammates who also chipped in 13 points. North Muskegon improves to 14-1 on the season.

2004 Class

Drew Neitzel – 5'11" 165 lbs. PG (Wyoming Park High School, Wyoming, MI). With two big conference games at stake, Neitzel and company did not disappoint. On Tuesday night Neitzel dropped 28 points in a win over Kenowa Hills and on Friday he notched 36 points in a win over Cedar Springs to improve the Vikings record to 12-4. Wyoming Park defeated the Red Hawks 68-55 and evened the season series at one a piece. Earlier in the year Cedar Springs held Neitzel to under 10 points and beat the Vikings by 13.

Marquise Gray – 6'7" 215 lbs. PF (Flint Beecher High School, Flint, MI). The Buccaneers proved that it's never over till it's over on Friday. After trailing by 13 points in the third quarter, Flint Beecher dug down and pulled out a 73-59 overtime win over Saginaw Nouvel Catholic Central. Gray finished with 17 points and converted on the tying field goal to send the game into OT at 57-57. The Buccaneers improve to 12-4 on the year.
