Spartans Roundball Update

One of head coach Tom Izzo's recruits breaks a high school scoring record, while another pulls down 15 and 23 rebounds in back-to-back contests. Read for more on the recent high school performances of future Michigan State Spartans!

Roundball Recruits

2003 Class

Shannon Brown – 6’3" 190 lbs. SG (Proviso East High School, Maywood, Ill.). Brown scored 33 points, but it wasn’t enough to lift the Pirates to the victory. The No. 4 Proviso East squad dropped a 69-65 overtime decision to Hinsdale South at home on Friday night. The loss dropped the Pirates record to 21-3 on the season. Proviso East will close out the regular season on Friday with a game against Morton.

Brandon Cotton – 6’0" 170 lbs. PG (Detroit St. Martin DePorres, Southfield, MI). Cotton poured in 31 points to help DePorres to the Central/Double-A Catholic League Championship on Sunday. Cotton scored 14 of his points in the fourth quarter to lead his team to a 59-49 victory over Orchard Lake St. Mary’s. DePorres remains the top team in Class C with a record of 19-0.

Drew Naymick – 6’10" 224 lbs. F/C (North Muskegon High School, Muskegon, MI). Naymick had a record-breaking week on the hard-court. On Tuesday the senior broke the Norsemen’s career points record on his way to a 17 point, 9 rebounds and 4 block performance in a 68-40 victory over Holton. He followed it up on Friday by recording a triple-double as the Norsemen took care of Montague 58-39. Naymick had 13 points, 10 rebounds and 10 blocks for the No. 5 Class C team in the state. Following Friday’s performance Naymick has now scored 1,389 points in his career. North Muskegon’s record stands at 17-1 on the year and the Norsemen have two more games before their district matchup.

2004 Class

Drew Neitzel – 5’11" 165 lbs. PG (Wyoming Park High School, Wyoming, MI). Neitzel and the Vikings enjoyed two blowout wins on the week. On Tuesday Neitzel threw in 39 points in a 90-62 win over Hastings. On Friday he scored 21 points, but also showed off his distribution skills to pick up 10 assists, to help the Vikings to an 86-47 win over Sparta. Wyoming Park’s record improves to 14-4 on the year. Wyoming Park will also face off twice more before the districts begin.

Marquise Gray – 6’7" 215 lbs. PF (Flint Beecher High School, Flint, MI). It wan an up and down week for the Buccaneers. On Tuesday the 10th ranked team in Class C were upset by Saginaw Buena Vista 61-59 in double overtime. Gray had 10 points and 15 points in the loss. On Friday the result was a lot better. Beecher scored a 74-58 win over Saginaw Valley Lutheran to get back on the winning track. Gray had a monstrous performance, scoring 15 points and pulling down 23 rebounds. The Buccaneers improve to 13-5 on the year.
