"Michigan State is pretty high on my list. They have a strong degree and give a player a lot of exposure. They are also close to home but that really isn't a factor for me as I don't care how far away I go. I did come away feeling a good connection with Coach Dantonio as he reminds me a lot of my high school coach."
One thing that might help the Spartans cause is Showers is being recruited by defensive coordinator Pat Narduzzi.
"Coach Narduzzi is my recruiting coach. He's talking to me about being a corner. He's full of energy and you can't calm him down. He's stronger than most people on the team."
As for the things he's looking for in a school, Valdez has it down.
"Academics, location and the coaches are the things I'm looking at. I just want to get that feel knowing this is where I need to be."
While Valdez talks about making a connection with Mark Dantonio, he says there's more to it.
"It's his presence. He's straight forward and when you're talking with him he's giving you everything he's got. He's offering you and not misleading you in anything. What you see is what you're going to get with him."
As for this weekend Valdez is not sure yet if he'll make it to East Lansing.
"I'm going to try and go to the Spring Game if my coach can take me."
With Iowa showing interest and other programs from across the country looking to jump on board, Valdez Showers is keeping his options open. But if he's really got a connection going with Coach Dantonio there is a good chance the Spartans will be in the race until the end.
