Roundball Recruits

2003 Class

Shannon Brown – 6'3" 190 lbs. SG (Proviso East High School, Maywood, Ill.). Brown scored 28 points in the regular season finale to lead the Pirates to a 67-47 win over Morton. The No. 7 ranked team in Class AA finished the season 22-3 overall and 11-1 in the West Suburban League. Brown and company will return to action on Tuesday night for a showdown with LaGrange Park (Nazareth Academy) in the Maywood (Proviso East) regional semifinal.

Brandon Cotton – 6'0" 170 lbs. PG (Detroit St. Martin DePorres, Southfield, MI). Cotton's game-high 23 points was enough to help DePorres remain unbeaten in the regular season. The No. 1 Class C team in the state fell to Detroit Renaissance 57-50 in the title game of the Operation Friendship Games on Friday night. The games pit the best from the Detroit Public Schools and the Detroit Catholic League. Cotton was tested by a pair of guards from Renaissance that held their own. Junior guard Joe Crawford, a Michigan commit, and Malik Hairston played some tough defense and managed to hold Cotton to just 7-of-16 shooting from the field. Crawford finished with 13 points. DePorres (19-1) will return to action on Tuesday night against Detroit Community in the district quarterfinal held at DePorres.

Drew Naymick – 6'10" 224 lbs. F/C (North Muskegon High School, Muskegon, MI). Naymick had another huge week as the Norsemen took home the outright West Michigan Conference championship on Tuesday night. Naymick poured in 29 points, pulled down 12 rebounds and blocked 5 shots in North Muskegon's 77-51 win over Muskegon Oakridge. Naymick followed that performance by scoring 20 points and grabbing 18 rebounds to beat Shelby, the second-place team in the WMC, 65-54. The Norsemen finished the season 19-1 overall and a perfect 14-0 in conference. North Muskegon will take on Ravenna on Tuesday night in the Muskegon Catholic Central district quarterfinals.

2004 Class

Drew Neitzel – 5'11" 165 lbs. PG (Wyoming Park High School, Wyoming, MI). Neitzel had two 35-point plus performances this week, but the Vikings could only pick up a split. On Tuesday, Neitzel scored 36 points and dished out five assists to lead Wyoming Park to an 82-51 win over Caledonia. On Friday night, he scored 38 points and dished out 8 assists, but it wasn't enough for the Vikings to get past Wayland, who triumphed with an 87-77 victory. The Vikings finished the season 15-5 overall and 12-4 in the OK-Gold Conference. Wyoming Park will participate in the Wyoming-Godwin Heights district along with the No. 1 Class B team – Grand Rapids South Christian. Caledonia, Wyoming-Kelloggsville, Wyoming-Rogers and host Wyoming-Godwin Heights round out the district.

Marquise Gray – 6'7" 215 lbs. PF (Flint Beecher High School, Flint, MI). Gray scored 9 points in Beecher's 64-58 win over a tough Northwestern team on Friday night. The win propelled the Buccaneers to a 15-5 finish. On Tuesday night Beecher won a non-conference contest against Millington 75-52. Gray did not play in the game. Beecher, who is ranked as the No. 10 team in Class, will take on Burton-Bendle tonight at 8 p.m. in the Flint-Hamady district.
