Spartan 66 Player Ranking #64

In looking at players on the current roster and players getting ready to enter Michigan State this fall, presents its Spartan 66 Rankings. What is our reason for naming sixty-six Spartans? Michigan State last won a National Championship in 1966. We're now at player #64.

SD Ranking: #64

Derek Hoebing

Position: Tight End

Exp: Redshirt Freshman

Is much expected out of Hoebing this fall? Not really, but he's got to continue to show improvement at tight for a spot in the rotation with the tight ends. Since high school some have looked at Hoebing becoming an offensive lineman, this is still a possibility in the coming year as the tight end position has several top quality players in place. Right now we'll keep Derek as a tight end and a player who should be seeing time on special teams and some spot play when the score allows.

Strengths: Physical size and athletic ability.

Weakness: Experience and getting ahead of other on the depth chart.

Overall: Mark Dantonio loves tight ends in his offense and Derek is the type of player the Spartans will look to continue to build up in the coming season. Time on special teams will be expected with continued development from the Vermilion, Ohio native.

Why He Made The List: Two tight end sets are a staple of Mark Dantonio's power offense and Hoebing has the physical size and skills to be a very good one in the years to come. While he won't be expected to be a star this fall, his overall development is very important to the Spartans program in the years to come. If Hoebing has any setbacks it might be time to look at using his abilities and making him into an offensive tackle.
