In looking at players on the current roster and players getting ready to enter Michigan State this fall, presents its Spartan 66 Rankings. What is our reason for naming sixty-six Spartans? Michigan State last won a National Championship in 1966. We're now at player #34.

SD Ranking: #34

Steve Gardiner

Position: Linebacker

Exp: Redshirt Sophomore

When you back up an All-American you know you'll get a few chances to show your stuff and you better make the best of it. That is the position Steve Gardiner is in as he enters his third season in the Spartans program. While we could have listed Steve down the list some, the fact he's the future of the Spartans defense means this season will be very important in his development.

Strengths: Athletic with the ability to start in many programs in the country.

Weakness: Game Experience.

Overall: While it would be easy to say Steve Gardiner has yet to show the ability that made him one of the top prospects in high school, it also needs to be noted Greg Jones just happens to be in front of him. In many other programs Gardiner would be breaking into the starting lineup. That will come in time and he'll be fully prepared.

Why He Made The List: He's the backup to the Spartans most important defensive player. While you hope he gets some reps, you also hope he's not making starts. A solid player capable of making the plays needed, Gardiner is a very important part in the future of Michigan State football.
