Crystal Ball Week 8

Spring practice is now a memory and fans are counting down until camp opens up in August. In our Spartan Digest Crystal Ball the Spartans are sitting with a record of 7-0 and are the talk of college football as the most surprising team of the season. But, the first game outside of the state of Michigan is one that could see the Spartans come back down to earth.

Northwestern (Sat. Oct 23, 2010) Ryan Field

2009 Record: 8-5 BIG TEN 5-3

Last Game Against MSU: 2009 Score: 24-14, Spartan Win

Pat Fitzgerald has things working in Evanston with the Wildcats and coming off an exciting bowl performance against Auburn, fans may be thinking it's time for the Purple to rise again to the top of the Big Ten Conference.

While things are going good, they are not ready to see the Wildcats take on the elite powers in the conference and a hot Michigan State team looking to continue their winning ways.

If quarterback Mike Kafka was back we'd be talking about a different outcome in the final score. Replacing Kafka looks to be Dan Persa who has all the tools Fitzgerald looks for in a quarterback. But while a top signal caller looks to be in the waiting and an offensive line that returns five starters, the key will be finding a top notch running back capable of making plays when they are needed most.

On defense the Wildcats have a talented front seven but lack any one in the backfield that can be considered consistent. This will prove costly against the Spartans when the final whistle blows.

This will not be an easy win, but the Spartans Digest Crystal Ball has the Spartans moving their record to 8-0. Crystal Ball Prediction: Spartans Win – 21 - 20.
