Williamson Can See It

While he didn't really plan on making a camp trip to East Lansing, Roger Williamson knew he needed to see more of the Spartans if he was really going to take them serious as a school of interest. What did Williamson see? Spartan Digest has the latest on the Dayton, Ohio product.

It didn't take Roger Williamson long to show why he held an offer from Michigan State. By running a 4.42 forty, Williamson of Dayton (Ohio) Dunbar High School showed he had the speed to play at a very high level. But it wasn't the need to show his speed that brought the 6-foot-01, 180-pound defensive back to the Michigan State campus.

"It was a very good experience for me and I saw some things that I really liked. I've got to see myself playing at a school, and going to camp allowed me that chance with Michigan State."

While Williamson was impressive during the testing part of camp, it was his drill work and one-on-one work that turned some heads.

"I think I did pretty well on Monday. I went out there and played a great defense and had some nice work in drills. I had a nice forty, broad jump and vertical. The coaches seemed happy with my performance."

While there might have been some doubts about his interest in Michigan State, those soon faded as he had a chance to meet Spartan head coach Mark Dantonio and revisit with defensive backs coach Harlon Barnett.

"I had met Coach Barnett before in passing, but wanted a chance to meet Coach Dantonio in person. I just had to get up there. I came away after a nice talk with Coach Dantonio feeling that he's a loyal guy and if I came to Michigan State, he'd be there for me. He's the type of person I can see myself playing for and being with for four or five years. Coach Barnett is not one of those fuzzy coaches as he's very demanding, but he also points out what you do well. He's a good coach and I really liked working with him and talking with him."

As for a rating of his visit, R.J. was quick and to the point.

"I would have to give Michigan State an 8 or higher. I really liked it and from what I heard from them as to how they can help me academically, is something that is very important. But I also liked how I feel they'll help me progress as a man and not just a football player."

While at MSU, Roger also got a chance to speak with another fellow Dayton native and Spartan, Jerel Worthy.

"My mother and I got a few minutes to speak with Jerel Worthy. He and Coach Barnett joked that if I went to Michigan State, I wouldn't need any ride as I could just come back home with Jerel. Jerel is cool and I could see myself being a teammate of his."

As for a time frame on making a decision, Roger knows he's not ready to pull the trigger.

"My mother and I are still planning on visiting some schools this fall. I'd like to visit Stanford, Wisconsin, Maryland, Kansas and West Virginia."

With camps over Roger knows it's time to get down to business.

"Right now I'm just getting ready for the season as we've got a couple more passing camps coming up."

Spartan Digest will stay in touch with Roger "R.J. Williamson in the coming weeks for further updates.
