Three remain in quest for state championship

Three MSU recruits guided their teams to the next round of their respective state tournaments, while the lone recruit out of Illinois had his championship dreams dashed. Find out where the remaining players and their teams will be heading next.

  In Class C action in Michigan all three teams captured the regional title and earned a berth into the state quarterfinals.

  Detroit St. Martin DePorres was the first team to advance with a 50-36 victory over Inkster on Thursday night. Senior guard Brandon Cotton scored 15 points in the win.

  DePorres (24-1) will take on Unionville-Sebewaing at 6 p.m. in West Bloomfield.

  Flint Beecher and North Muskegon wrapped their regionals on Friday night and will face each other in the quarterfinals at Alma on Tuesday night.

  Beecher (20-5) got out to an early lead against the Leslie Blackhawks and held on for a 48-37 victory. Marquise Gray pumped in 15 points to lead the Buccaneers.

  North Muskegon (24-1) easily handled the regional host team, Sanford-Meridian, 53-40. Six-foot-ten center Drew Naymick finished with 13 points, eight rebounds and four blocks for the Norsemen.

  In state action in Illinois, Maywood (Proviso East) dropped a 60-56 overtime decision to Chicago (Hubbard) in a sectional championship on Friday night.

  Senior guard Shannon Brown poured in 35 points to keep the Pirates (25-4) in the game.
