Top Jr. Wis. Recruit Has U-M Offer

One can count on two hands the number of Michigan scholarship offers so far. And as usual for this time of year, the prospects with offers are not always the well-known kids. Here is one: a Wisconsin defensive lineman who is not 'famous' -- yet.

Yours truly talked Tuesday evening to defensive end Nick Hayden (6-5, 270 lbs., 4.8 in the 40, 320-lb. bench press, 28-inch vertical jump, 3.0 GPA) from Hartland, Wis., Arrowhead.

Nick, has Michigan offered you a scholarship?

"Yes. That is right."

How did it happen?

"My mom and dad and I went for a visit for the OSU basketball game. We looked at the campus. We had a meeting Coach Carr in his office. They had seen my tapes, and Coach Carr offered me a scholarship."

Who else has offered you?

"My coach wants me to keep that confidential. But I have more than ten offers."

Do you have a list of favorites?

"Not at this time. I'll look at several schools and see what I like best."

What are your spring and summer plans?

"I will probably attend a spring practice at Michigan. As far as camps, I don't think I'll go to any. My school has its own camp, and I'll lift weights the the whole summer."

Hartland had a great season.

"Yes, we lost in the state championship game to Marshfield."

Do you play any other sports?

"Basketball. I play center and forward. There was a senior who started ahead of me, but I usually got the most playing time."

His junior season Hayden had approx. twenty sacks, and averaged approx. ten tackles a game.

Hartland Arrowhead finished the season 13-2.
