Stauskas on Verge of UM Commitment?

South Kent (CT) G/F Nick Stauskas has received the offer he has been expecting from John Beilein. Nick talks about the conversation he and Coach John Beilein had. Is a commitment be far behind?

Back in August, South Kent (CT) G/F Nick Stauskas made the trip to Michigan expecting an offer from John Beilein.  Though disappointed when that offer didn't come, he was heartened by the Wolverines' strong interest and by their persistent contact in the weeks and months since.

Monday he the class-of-2012 prospect finally got what he had been waiting for when Beilein made his way to South Kent's open gym and had a chance to see the 6-5, 200-pounder turn in a stellar performance during which he shot an extremely high percentage.

"Coach seen me at the gym yesterday and liked it, " said Stauskas.  "He doesn't want to break NCAA rules so he just said hi to me (at the open gym).  We had a very good phone conversation (later) and he told me he likes the way I played and he knows a good player when he sees one. Coach Beilein said, ‘an offer is on the table for you to come and play at the University of Michigan.' It is something I have been expecting for a while and it is great that it finally came".

The Wolverines weren't the only ones to make a strong play in Stauskas' recruitment yesterday.  The Canada native saw a welcomed expansion of collegiate options in a very short period of time.

"I also got offered by Wake Forest, and according to my dad, Stanford and Butler," he reported.  "I haven't heard from (Stanford and Butler) myself yet, but I talked to Wake Forest and Michigan and they both offered over the phone.  Oklahoma State was the only other one that had offered (prior to this latest wave of offers), but they're not really recruiting me.  They kind of just put the offer on the table and I haven't really talked to them a lot."

The growth of Stauskas' scholarship list wasn't the only recruiting news he received yesterday.  During his conversation with Beilein, another important message was conveyed.

"They're looking for a decision pretty quick," Stauskas said of the Wolverines.  "That's the thing I'm talking about with my family and my coaches right now.  I'm just trying to see what's the best decision for me right now."

The question now is what are the odds of a very quick decision?

"There's a good possibility," Stauskas admitted.  "One thing about Michigan to me is it's close to home, and that means a lot to me.  Also, am I going to be able to play a lot where ever I go? Am I going to be able to fit into their offense?  I think in all of those categories Michigan is the best for me.  It's close to home, I think I'd get minutes as a freshman, and I fit their style of play.  The way they play, (Beilein) wants a guy who can shoot it, rebound, the ball and attack the rim. Watching me play yesterday Coach Beilein had a chance to see how I can make plays for others".

It's tough to say (exactly when a commitment with come), but I'm pretty close to making a decision.  If I don't go with Michigan, then I won't make a decision for a while."
